DNV has secured two ship recycling frame agreements with NYK to provide the Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) and perform review and survey for the IHM Statement of Compliance for 35 NYK-operated vessels.


Under the terms of the agreement, DNV will not only manage the inventories for 24 NYK vessels currently classed by DNV, but also vessels classed by other societies. The agreement was finalised on 18 November.
According to Shunichiro Namikawa, DNV’s manager of pre-contract services in Kobe in Japan, the frame agreement represents a win-win situation for both NYK and DNV. “NYK has negotiated a reasonable price for a high quality product while DNV has helped strengthen its position in ship recycling,” he says. “This agreement also demonstrates NYK’s enduring commitment to environmental protection in tough market.”
The Japanese shipping giant NYK Line operates about 800 vessels, of which roughly 300 are owned by NYK. Awarded the Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award in 2005, NYK has taken a leadership role in environmentally responsible shipping by staying well ahead of emerging regulations, including the IMO’s International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, which has yet to be ratified. Regardless, NYK has recently started creating the inventory of hazardous materials covering their entire fleet.
Namikawa says that in 2008, NYK contacted several class organisations, including DNV (Kobe) to prepare inventories for the vessels they own and operate. DNV was contracted on a trial basis to perform a vessel inventory for the M/S Champion Pride (ABS Class). NYK reviewed the DNV inventory process, which was based on expertise sourced from DNV’s headquarters in Oslo. Satisfied with the results, NYK entered into negotiations with DNV to establish a framework agreement, which was eventually expanded to include 35 vessels.
At present, DNV is developing a systematic and robust procedure for training consultants, surveyors and plan approval engineers worldwide to help customers meet increasingly high environmental performance targets and regulations, including Ship Recycling Convention, ahead of compliance deadlines.
